Smokin' Word

2002 Season

2003 Season

SMOKIN' WORD's 2004 season was one of growth and recognition. We published 3 books and our film was in the Reel Sisters Film Festival. We produced a live show that went with the CD and toured to clubs and colleges, a reading where more than 100 people attended, and won the DUTF audience award. We had the exciting opportunity to work with Ma-yi and produce a show at LaMama ETC. We strengthed our relationship with Nuyorican Poets Cafe participating in the fundraisers for Pedro Pietri and producing a one woman show in thier space. In the theatre community we worked more closely with The Community Dish and our Artistic Director joined thier board. We also worked with TheatreMania and had a booth in thier 2nd Ave Street Fair. The presidential election inspired us to become more politically active and we created an exciting new form of hip-hop spoken word performance with the Smokin D'bate, to get people registered to vote and discussing the issues. We ended the year on a high note producing a hot poetry show while simultaniously helping poets submit thier work to HBO's Def Poetry Jam.
