SMOKIN' WORDSHOP

• Smokin' Wordshop was begun in September of 2003 to gather MC and poet playwrights to create new work by teaching each other with hip-hop, spoken word and other writing exersizes. The group used freestyle, visual art, and writing exersizes that covered eveything from dialouge, action, throughline, conflict, poetry devices, and current events. They met weekly in Yolanda Wilkinsons kitchen in the heart of Harlem supporting each others projects, and discussing subjects such as as balancing your art and work, writers block, professional formatting, submitting your play to contests, applying for grants, and technology. WordShop produced two Script This! events and several plays developed by the group were produced soon after them.

Script This! was created to present exerpts of the work the playwrights were writing. Fiirst produced at Manhattan Theatre Club in February 2004. The second was produced in February 2005. Plays produced soon after Script This! were Yolanda Wilkinson's Meeting of the God's, A Musing, and Hue; Claudia Alick's BodyWork, and Six Hits, Kyana Brindles Between Spaces, and Dyalekt's Dyalekt Talks Too Much or Square Peg Syndrome. Jesse Alick's Come Back to Me was produced at The Cherry Lane Theatre in The DownTown Urban Theatre Festival in July of 2005.
